Reading the dress code
- Black tie: a floor-length gown or very elegant cocktail dress
- Formal: a midi or maxi dress, or a refined jumpsuit
- Cocktail: a knee-length or midi dress, dressy separates
- Casual or garden: light fabrics, florals, block heels
Colours to avoid
Skip white, ivory and anything that could look bridal. Unless the couple asks for it, avoid all-black at daytime weddings too.
Think about the venue
Grass means block heels or flats, a beach means breathable fabrics, and an evening event may need a wrap or jacket.
Comfort matters: you will stand, sit, dance and eat, so choose something you can move in for hours.
