How to Choose a Haircut for Your Face Shape

Round, long, square or oval? How to tell your face shape and the cuts that flatter it most.

The right haircut can make your face look more balanced and brighter. Before your next salon visit, take two minutes to work out your face shape.

How to find your face shape

Tie your hair back, stand in front of a mirror and look for the widest part of your face: forehead, cheekbones or jaw. Then compare length with width to see whether your face is longer or rounder.

Ideas for each face shape

  • Round: shoulder-length or longer hair, side-swept wispy bangs; avoid chin-length bobs
  • Long: mid-length cuts with volume at the sides; straight bangs help balance length
  • Square: soft waves and gentle layers around the jaw to soften angles
  • Oval: suits almost anything, so try a pixie or long and sleek with confidence
  • Heart: a long bob grazing the shoulders with a little fullness at the ends

Don’t forget your hair texture

Fine hair looks fuller with fewer layers and a moderate length. Thick, coarse hair benefits from more layering to remove weight. Tell your stylist about your texture and how much time you spend styling.

Bring two or three reference photos, plus one look you don’t like. Your stylist will understand you much faster.
