The Capsule Wardrobe: 20 Pieces for a Whole Year of Great Outfits

Fewer clothes, but always something to wear. How to build a capsule wardrobe from scratch.

You open a packed closet and still feel you have nothing to wear. That usually means your wardrobe is full of one-off pieces that don’t work together. A capsule wardrobe fixes this with one simple rule: fewer items, one colour palette, and every piece pairs with the rest.

Step 1: Choose a base palette

Pick two or three neutrals as your foundation (beige, ivory, black, grey or navy) plus one or two accent colours you truly love. When everything sits inside that palette, it becomes very hard to get an outfit wrong.

Step 2: A suggested list of 20 pieces

  • 3 plain, good-quality cotton tees (white, black, beige)
  • 2 shirts: one white, one with a fine stripe
  • 1 lightweight crew-neck knit
  • 1 relaxed blazer
  • 1 light jacket (a trench or a denim jacket)
  • 2 pairs of straight-leg trousers
  • 1 pair of dark indigo jeans
  • 1 midi skirt
  • 2 dresses: one for work, one for weekends
  • 3 pairs of shoes: white sneakers, flats or loafers, strappy sandals
  • 2 bags: a tote and a small crossbody
  • 1 silk scarf for a pop of colour

Step 3: Style it before you buy more

Before any new purchase, ask: does this work with at least three things I already own? If not, it will probably sit untouched in the closet.

A great wardrobe isn’t a big one. It’s one you actually wear.

Refresh it each season

At the start of every season, spend an afternoon reviewing what is worn out and what you never reached for. Replace things on purpose rather than on impulse. After a few seasons you will spend less and have a clearer sense of style.
