A good manicure is mostly about preparation. Get the base right and the colour will last far longer.
What you need
- Nail clippers and a glass or fine file
- Cuticle oil and an orangewood stick
- Base coat, colour and top coat
- Nail polish remover and a small brush for clean-up
Step by step
Remove old polish, then shape your nails, filing in one direction. Soften cuticles with oil and gently push them back. Wipe each nail with remover so the surface is clean and dry.
Apply a thin base coat, then two thin coats of colour, letting each dry for a couple of minutes. Seal with a top coat, including a swipe along the free edge of the nail.
Make it last
Wear gloves for washing up and re-apply top coat every two or three days. Finish each evening with a drop of cuticle oil.
